Hello.
I have been teaching English for the past 20 years. I am a TEFL certified teacher as well as a certified CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program) Instructor.
During this time I have also managed companies in the oil & gas and manufacturing sectors. As a result, I have extensive experience in Business English, in particular, business email, PowerPoint presentations, and writing policies and procedures. I apply this knowledge when I teach English to my students. My teaching focus is Business English and preparation for IELTS, TOEFL and CELPIP exams. I also have extensive experience in assisting people to prepare resumes when applying for jobs and for job interviews. I employ the Dogme style of teaching.
If you are unfamiliar with the Dogme teaching technique, it is an approach that argues that teaching should focus on the learner and not be driven by the resources available, including course books. It is a recent movement in ELT, started by a group of teachers in the UK who are against ‘resource heavy’ teaching, arguing that if learners are not interested they will not learn and therefore where possible material should be generated by the learners and the lessons directed by them, rather than the teacher.
The teacher’s role is to maintain the focus on the goals of the student. For example, if the student wants to immigrate to Canada, the teacher asks that the student bring materials/articles that discuss Canada. Comparing results with other teachers that apply the same technique, we are generally finding that we are very successful in assisting the student to maintain a high level of interest in their classes and also a high success rate achieving their goals.
